Character name: Ann Finley (human AU Raggedy Ann)
Canon: Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure
Age: 15
Gender: female

Abilities & skills: Annie is an average student at school. While her mother Marcella pushes her to work harder she is at least satisfied with her B-average grades, and understands that it's not the only important thing in her daughter's life. Her strongest subject is in the arts. She enjoys making small craft projects out of everyday items - flowers, paper, little scraps of fabric, essentially if you were to put something to fiddle with into her hands, you're likely to end up with a little homemade charm. When Ann was ten years old Marcella also signed her up for piano lessons, and while she doesn't practice as much as she should to be brilliant she does play pleasantly, sometimes just making up her own tunes for the fun of it - most of the time she forgets what she performed, though. Her best friend Babette is teaching her French, but she only knows a few basic words and sentences thus far.

Personality: Annie is very young for her age, socially awkward, and not the most physically fit. Due to respiratory issues from her childhood she isn't able to exert herself much, and tends to have two left feet. She has lived a sheltered life, not seeing a lot of the terrible things in the world, even during her time in foster care. As such, she sees the world in an optimistic light, and expects the best out of everyone she meets. This unfortunately means she doesn't always know when somebody might mean to hurt her until she's already in trouble, and it's hard for her to get out of it on her own. Since she's spent so much of her life under her older brother's wing, she tends to be overly dependent on him, even when she doesn't want to be, and apart from him she often feels vulnerable and unsure of herself, especially in potentially harmful situations.

But despite all that, if one word were to describe her it would be 'loving.' While she is very shy and may not always know what to say, she is a good listener and extremely empathetic to others, and will always reach out to someone in need and put them before herself. She makes friends easily and is extremely trusting. She tends to wear her heart on her sleeve and betraying that trust is emotionally devastating. She is very physically affectionate as well; be it a simple hand on the shoulder or a hug, she expresses her care for others best through physical contact.

Ann enjoys the outdoors and loves sitting in the field behind Marcella's house. She likes the smell of flowers and watching children run and play, or paddling her feet in the stream. She loves sweets, especially sweetheart candies and chocolates, especially when she has a whole box of them that she can share with someone else.

AU history: Ann doesn't remember much about her biological family; at age four, she and her older brother Andy were orphaned when their parents died in a house fire. They were admitted to a local hospital where they stayed for several days to make sure they recovered. Annie was mute for the entire time out of trauma and grief, until they were released into foster care and as they said goodbye to the elderly Doctor Camel, she said he looked like he had wrinkled knees. Her voice was hoarse and she always breathed funny after that - it was suspected that the smoke from the fire damaged her throat.

The two siblings went through several foster homes, many of which were not unkind but still didn't work out for one reason or another. Andy was extremely protective of his baby sister in these times, and Ann fell back on him willingly, often sneaking in to sleep in his bed when she was lonely or scared. Even when Andy was deathly ill and the two were separated to keep her from getting sick too, she still managed to spend every minute she could by his side, making a little paper daisy for him to cheer him up. Even with his rough and tumble personality, Andy still carries that flower with him for luck.

Finally after a few years, they were taken in by Marcella Finley, an old-fashioned but nurturing woman who was endeared to the children and ultimately adopted them officially. Andy wasn't so fond of Marcella and was generally reluctant to accept his new permanent home, but Annie found herself feeling right at home, quick to call Marcella "mama" and settle in as if they had always been family.

Ann is now in high school, and her closest friend is Babette, an exchange student from Paris. They met on Babette's first day, when she was extremely homesick and her English was so rudimentary she was barely functioning, but with some unspoken communication between the two they became close. Annie helps her acclimate to America, while Babette teaches her everything she can about France. While their teenage years have caused Ann and Andy to start forging their own separate paths and even have their disputes, Annie does still find herself looking to her big brother even while struggling to be independent, while he also finds it a little hard to see her as anything but the scared little girl he protected for ten years.

Third or first person sample: It was Friday afternoon after the last bell. Ann and Babette weaved easily through the crowds to their lockers as the blonde regaled a story from the day about someone sneaking a frog into algebra class. Ann moved on autopilot as she listened - even after a year, she still had to concentrate sometimes to understand her friend's thick accent - leaning against a parallel locker and dialing in the combination.

But then as she opened the locker, her mind suddenly went blank as she spotted a little envelope sitting on top of her spare notebooks. She could see it was bedazzled with glittery gel pen and sealed with a heart sticker, and she let the books she was hugging to her chest fall to the floor with a heavy thud as her hands flew to her face, flushing as red as her hair.

"...Annie? Annie, what's wrong?" if the redhead heard her friend she didn't respond, picking the envelope up in two fingers and lifting it as if she were afraid it was going to bite her. At that moment, Babette leaned in to see what she was gawking at and a squeal of delight escaped her lips.

"Mon diu! Who is it from? Let me see it!" she giggled, grabbing eagerly as Annie blushed harder, clutching it to her chest for protection.

"What--no! I-I don't know, it was just - omigosh, what do I do?!"

"Open it! I simply must know!" Babette urged her on with anticipation. Ann's heart felt like it was about to jump out of her throat only to swan dive back down into the pit of her stomach. She flipped it around over and over, seeing no name or hint of who it might be from. Who could it be from? She didn't think anybody really liked her that way - oh goodness what if it was from Josh from biology, the one who always held the door open for her?! She would probably die on the spot if she thought he really liked her.

She looked uncertainly at Babette who nodded and urged her on, then back down at the envelope. With trembling hands she carefully loosened the sticker seal from the paper, opening the envelope without tearing the handiwork. Her face was unbearably hot as she blushed, lifting the handwritten card from inside.

...but that was as far as she got before she saw Babette gave her a rough nudge of the elbow, indicating Andy coming from down the hall, no doubt looking for her to walk her home. Ann hastily stuffed the card back into the envelope, shoving it into the pocket of her hoodie before her brother noticed it.

"Annie, are you feeling okay?" Andy said as he came alongside her, eyebrow raised as he observed her red face and reached a hand up to feel her forehead.

"Yeah. Yeah of course. I'm fine!" Ann muttered hastily, likely not made any more convincing by Babette giggling uncontrollably.
